Called to Common Mission 2010
Saint Davids Episcopal Church
and
Lutheran Church in the San Juans, Friday Harbor Branch
Background. In 2007, our two congregations began a process to explore how the recently adopted Called to Common Mission full communion relationship might be lived out locally. At that time eight objectives were identified. It was determined that common mission could be enhanced by an arrangement whereby the Lutheran congregation would relocate from St. Francis Parish to St. Davids. The actual move was never realized.
In the summer of 2009, during a visioning retreat, the congregational council for the Lutheran Church in the San Juans (LCSJ) requested that we newly explore the option. The objectives from 2007 were reviewed and reaffirmed. Initial conversations with the Rector and Vestry at St. Davids along with the congregational council and voting members of the Friday Harbor branch of LCSJ were both able to support the possibility of a new proposal.
Agreement: We reaffirm the objectives established in 2007, and agree to these specific steps:
1. The Lutheran Church in the San Juans, Friday Harbor, will relocate to St Davids Church for Sunday worship and other congregational activities.
2. The Lutheran worship service will take place 9:15 10:15 on Sunday mornings.
3. LCSJ will remit a monthly fee of $250 to St. Davids.
4. The proposed date for moving into the new schedule and arrangement is February 14, 2010. (It is noted that Ash Wednesday is February 17)
5. Regular evaluation and necessary adjustments will take place. Initially, we will evaluate weekly and monthly with major evaluation in six months. (August)
6. In the event that either St. Davids or LCSJ determines the need to end this agreement, 60 days notice shall be given.
Transition Goals. To accomplish a smooth transition, a transition team will guide the process, and facilitate smooth collaboration and cooperation around such practical matters as parking and entering the building so as not to disturb worship, coffee hour kitchen sharing, altar and worship space preparation and clean-up, proper elevator usage, adjustments to the exterior street sign, common communication with the San Juan Island community. We want to plan a meaningful way of marking the transition through liturgy and celebration.
Evaluation. The initial meetings of representatives from both congregations have also identified the desire to develop a clear means of evaluation and of visioning for shared ministry and mission in this community.
