This is not the Tower of Babel going up. But its vertical height does take ones breath away. Our little church that once obscurely huddled against the hillside is now making a bolder statement in our community. Let's hope we can continue the statement when the carpenters go home.
Our church is also pushing out on its western backside. The extension will provide a focus if one wants to reorient the interior seating to form a half circle with the alter space in the extension. Or, it could become a side chapel. Its purpose is to give flexibility to how the interior space can be used.
Some parts of the construction process is a little more exciting than ripping out old walls and framing new ones. Raising high the roof beams is one of those moments. In this picture the crane is being positioned for the hoisting job it must carefully do.
The first beam is being lifted over the peak of the church to the west side. Workers scramble to intercept the beam as it will be lowered into place.
