Over the top of the church and lowered into place over the west side extention came the beam into place without a hitch. These guys knew what they were doing.
Next came the main beam over the east side extension. One can get an idea concerning how massive these beams are when a worker stands by it. The weight of these beams must equal that of an automobile.
The main beam is settling into place, being guided by two workers at each end. The beam must be carefully worked through a hole in the roof and settled into place on the other end. Notice the guy straddling the framing at the peak of the roof. A question: Did Jesus do something like this as a young man, working as a carpenter in Sepphoris, rebuilding that Roman city? Or did He go caravaning to the orient to engage with the Tao, as some speculate? Hmm. Hard work either way.
Inside the church the two beams are wedded together by a single bolt that runs through metal attachments that are anchored at the end of each beam. Notice the heavenly "light" beams that are blessing earthly wooden beams in wholely matrimony.
Putting in the main window took a bit of work and a few tense moments as the top panel was jockied into place. One false move and "crack!" Luck and a few silent prayers ensured a smooth operation.
Who is this masked man, kemosabe? "Renovation" has many meanings around St. David's. Here this mystery man is "renovating" the grass around the church. As construction on the sanctuary progresses, Gryphon Hall and the grounds around the church must be kept in shape by, who else, but volunteers. Great skill is required to ride this tempermental grass-renovating monster machine and Bill (whoops, he is now unmasked) can now cut the whole area without using the reverse. That, alone, is an accomplishment worth noting.
