The Youth Page (cont.)

St. David's Middle Schoolers recently were treated to a picnic excursion to Jones Island, a Washington State marine state park located just off the southwestern tip of Orcas Island. Here are some photos of the trip.

The big smile reflects the pleasure of sailing on the ocean main. The smile of the skipper, however, is a bit more tentative, knowing that piracy is in the heart of every middle schooler. The camouflaged attire, however, is a bit baffling if one wants to be hidden. That probably won't work against the backdrop of ocean blue.
Is this a picture of heat exhaustion, sun bathing, or a mock funeral? Or, perhaps, just goofing off. Well, whatever. May Light perpetual shine upon this poor soul.
Ah, the destination is reached. Food will soon be served and the bottomless pits will be serviced. In the meantime, a little good natured chatter and a bit of preening is the order of the day.
Every youth group has it budding preacher. The sermon title was, "Does God and Football Mix?" Now, Moses had his staff with a serpent twined around it. This one looks a bit like a raven or the head of an eagle. Today's symbology is a bit more abstract than in the time of Moses, so we'll just have to use our imagination on this one.
On the trip home the ubiquitous cell phone gets a little exercise from the group leader. Is it a 911 call or an SOS to alert authorities of an impending mutiny? Or, maybe it's just a call to quell the anxiety of a middle school mother, assuring her that her child has a life jacket on. In any event, everyone came home safe and sound, a little worn from the experience, but happier because of it.
